Nature meets Industry
We, once again, rose to the challenge of this
years theme for the Caerphilly Flower Festival.
We have a great heritage to celebrate in Caerphilly, including the history surrounding our castle, music and singing, and the ever changing faces of industry, countryside and architecture.
We are indeed proud of our own building which is described by Cadw as, 'an inspiring inter-war chapel built in 1930 Art Deco style with hints of Welsh Gothic'.

The remains of swamp plants and trees of 300 million years ago were compressed by later sediments into coal. This was later burned to keep homes warm and to power industries here and abroad.
There are over 300 working farms in the borough. The South Wales Mountain Sheep or Nelson Sheep is native to the hill areas and has been reared in the upland areas of South Wales for generations. In order to survive farmers have diversified and today you can find farmshops, stables, quad biking and a range of agricultural related activities in the borough.

Front of Church - Mining & Music
The Warren, Wern Ddu and Coed Parc y Fan make up the Caerphilly Woodlands. Throughout the area there is evidence of industrial activity dating back to Medieval times and includes some well-preserved lime kilns. Today the area is accessible on foot, cycle or horseback and is home to dormice, great crested newts, owls, buzzards, adders and slow worms.

The mining industry formed the backbone of local communities. The bands and choirs were a means by which miners and others could get together after work and socialize. The BTM Brass band was formed in 1972, however there is history of a Bedwas band dating back to early 1900. Some of the instruments were inherited from the old Windsor Colliery band in Abertridwr. Caerphilly Male Voice Choir was formed in 1906 for the purpose of making music of the highest possible standard for the enjoyment of others and has evolved with the town over the past 100 years.
